Argentina's "digital visa" is not a visa in the classic sense: it is a transitional residence reserved for digital nomads. This article explains who can apply, which documents to gather, where and how to file the application, how long you can stay, and what you need to know about extensions. It also points out the issues that most often cause applications to fail.
A "digital visa" that is actually a transitional residence
Argentina allows foreigners who provide services remotely, using computer or telecommunications means, to clients or companies based abroad to be granted a transitional residence of up to 180 days[1]. The regulations call them "nómadas digitales". It is therefore neither a temporary residence nor a permanent residence.
This scheme rests on Article 24, paragraph h) of Law 25.871, on Regulatory Decree 616 of May 3, 2010, and on Disposition 758/2022 of the National Directorate of Migrations (DNM)[2]. The official service describes it as a 180-day residence, extendable for an equivalent period[2].
Eligibility requirements
This residence is only open to citizens of countries whose nationals do not need a tourist visa to enter Argentina[2]. If your nationality requires a tourist visa, this scheme does not apply to you.
The work must be carried out remotely for people or companies based abroad[3]. This is not an authorization to work for an Argentine company.
To prove your identity, you need a valid passport that is still in force, whatever your nationality[2]. Mercosur nationals may instead present one of the travel documents listed in the Mercosur Agreement on Travel Documents[2].
The application file
Here are the documents to prepare. The official lists vary slightly depending on whether you apply from abroad or in Argentina, and the DNM may request other documents if it deems necessary[1].
- A valid passport[2].
- A signed application stating your personal details and the freelance activity you will carry out, with a brief resume detailing your experience in your field and your level of education or training[2].
- Proof of your activity: contract, letter of endorsement from a company, certifications, income or fee receipts, with at least one reference related to your occupation[2].
- A certificate of domicile, medical insurance covering your stay in Argentina, an Argentine criminal record certificate (obtained through the system) and, for those over 16, an external criminal record, an external criminal record for those over 16, and proof of regular entry into the country[4].
Any document issued abroad must be legalized by the Argentine consulate in the issuing country, or apostilled if that country has ratified the Hague Convention[4]. Any document in a foreign language must be accompanied by a Spanish translation made by a national public translator, legalized by the Translators' College[4]. The documents submitted must also be originals.
Procedures and payments: where and how to file
For the transitional nomad case, the application is made in person with the DNM in Argentina, after regular entry into the country[5]. The official service specifies that you must be on Argentine territory and, if you are inside the country, present yourself in person at the delegation or migration office corresponding to your jurisdiction[2].
The procedures are personal and straightforward: no gestor (intermediary) is needed[6]. The only payments to make are those generated by the official online platform[6].
If you are instead requesting an electronic entry authorization from abroad through the online RaDEx platform (a separate route from the nomad residence application filed in Argentina), the process works as follows:
- You create an account with your email address, which will then receive all updates on your file[6].
- After step 1 (entering your data), you receive login credentials by email to access step 2[7]. In step 2, you upload photos of your documents taken with your phone[6].
- The first payment is made exclusively through Provincia Net, by credit card[8].
- Migraciones sends file updates and the final resolution to the email address provided when the account was created[9].
Enter your personal details exactly as they appear on your passport[6].
Costs of the Procedure
The Argentine Transitory Residence Visa is listed at approximately $200 USD in total, made up of $120 USD in migration tax and $80 USD in consular fees[10]. This amount is a rough guide: the fees actually due are those generated by the official platform[6]. Check them on the Migraciones website before you pay.
Duration, Extension, and Moving to Residency
The residence is granted for 180 days and can be extended for an equivalent period[2]. The extension is handled through a dedicated official service titled “prórroga de residencia transitoria como Nómada Digital”[11].
Once admitted, registering with the DNM and RENAPER may, depending on your situation, give you access to a foreigner's DNI: ask the DNM about your case, and the Argentine tax authority issues the CUIT/CUIL tax number; check its current name and procedure with them. Maintaining your status is strictly enforced[5].

Other Routes: Student, Professional, and TIE Visas
If your project is not remote work for a foreign employer, other categories exist.
- The Tramitación de Ingreso Electrónica (TIE 24 H) lets you apply online for an entry authorization for professional, artistic, business, and study activities, for nationals of countries exempt from the tourist visa[12].
- The student visa for official education (secondary, higher, university, or postgraduate) allows a stay of up to two years[12].
- The student visa for non-official education, international mobility, exchanges, or internships allows a stay of up to one year[12].
- The tourist visa allows a stay of up to 90 days[12], and the business visa up to 60 days[12].
Pitfalls, Scams, and Points to Watch
- Foreign documents must be apostilled or legalized, and documents issued outside Mercosur without an apostille or consular legalization are not accepted[13]. Add a public Spanish translation[2].
- An online entry application (TIE) can only be filed from outside Argentine territory[6]. For the transitory nomad, it's the reverse: the application is filed on site, after a regular entry[5]. Don't confuse the two routes.
- The first RaDEx payment only accepts credit cards via Provincia Net[8].
- A typing error in your name or passport details is avoidable: copy them exactly as written[6].
- If you stay fewer than 183 days per year, you keep non-resident tax status in Argentina, according to the available information[10]. Tax rules evolve, so have a professional confirm your situation.
Steps, in Order
- Check that your nationality is exempt from the tourist visa for Argentina[2].
- Gather your file: passport, CV, signed application, proof of activity, proof of address, health insurance[4].
- Have foreign documents apostilled or legalized, then translated into Spanish by a national public translator[2].
- Enter Argentina regularly[5].
- File the application with the DNM, in person[2].
- Pay only the amounts generated by the official platform[6].
- Track the decision at the email address on your account[9].
- Once admitted, complete DNM/RENAPER registration (foreigner's DNI), then AFIP (CUIT/CUIL)[5].
- Plan your extension before the 180 days end[11].
This article gives you the essentials of the framework. Step-by-step procedures, the extension in detail, any move to another residence, and tax treatment require further research before you actually settle in.
