Argentina announced a citizenship-by-investment program on October 2, but applications are only expected in the fourth quarter of 2026, and several details remain unknown. This article separates what the sources confirm from what still needs clarifying. It helps you understand what this program changes, or doesn't change, for your residency and citizenship path. This is information, not investment advice.
What Is Announced, What Is Confirmed
The program was presented in Paris by Economy Minister Luis Caputo at Argentina Week[1]. It relies on two mechanisms: a direct, non-refundable contribution of USD 350,000 to the National Treasury, or the subscription of a USD 800,000 public bond created specifically for this program[1]. These amounts are also reported by AFP[2].
The government states that applications will undergo rigorous evaluation designed to protect national security, the integrity of the financial system, and the international prestige of Argentine citizenship[1]. All funds must pass through the formal financial system[1].
On timing, the Ministry of Economy refers to the fourth quarter of 2026, which runs through December 31, but has not announced a specific launch date[3]. Until that date is published, no application can be filed.
The Legal Basis: Decrees 366/2025 and 524/2025
The program builds on two texts already published. Decree 366/2025 amended citizenship Law 346: foreigners who, regardless of how long they have resided in the country, prove they have made a “relevant investment” there are eligible for naturalization[4].
Decree 524/2025 then set the application procedure and created the Agencia de Programas de Ciudadanía por Inversión (APCI), a body under the authority of the Ministry of Economy[5]. The Ministry of Economy determines which investments are considered relevant[4]. The criteria it adopts should be watched in the implementing regulations.
Amounts and Family: What the Announcement Says
The spouse and children of the main applicant may also apply, provided they prove the family relationship and pay the amount set for their category[1]. Spouses and children aged 18 to 25, single and without children, pay USD 100,000 to the National Treasury. Minors under 18 pay USD 25,000[1].
The government gives the example of a typical household made up of a main applicant, a spouse, and two minor children: the total comes to USD 500,000[1]. These amounts come from a government announcement, not from an implementing text, so they should be re-checked once the detailed rules are published.
How the Application Will Be Reviewed
The evaluation is conducted by the APCI, with the involvement of several public bodies, including the intelligence service (SIDE), the Financial Information Unit (UIF), and the Ministries of Security and of the Interior[1]. The process notably includes identity verification, traceability and lawful origin of funds, review of criminal and reputational records, and the migration history of applicants[1].
The APCI report draws on prior opinions from the Ministry of Security, the UIF, the National Recidivism Registry, the RENAPER, and the SIDE[4]. Once the evaluation is complete, the agency forwards its recommendation to the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones, which approves or rejects each application[1].
The Dirección Nacional de Migraciones has 30 business days from receiving the report to decide, through a reasoned decision[4]. This deadline runs from the APCI report: it does not represent the total length of the procedure, whose timeline has not been announced[3].
Citizenship by Investment or Ordinary Naturalization?
The ordinary route is the one that works today. According to a law firm cited in the Chambers Private Wealth 2026 report, a foreigner can obtain citizenship through naturalization after two years of continuous, uninterrupted legal residence[6]. The same document specifies that, until the investment regime is clarified, this is the only reliable and legally uncontested path to Argentine nationality for foreign investors[6].
A guide aimed at expatriates adds that continuity is strictly defined: no departure from Argentine territory is tolerated during this period, according to that guide[7]. This source is not official: verify this point with the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones before planning any travel.
The investment program is therefore not an automatic passport purchase: the grant remains subject to an assessment and a decision by the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones[1].

Traps, Scams and Points of Caution
What Is Not Yet Known
The government has not yet published the full list of required documents, the case processing timeline, or the concrete terms for paying the investment[3].
The terms of the USD 800,000 bond are also unclear: interest paid, repayment terms, and whether you can access your money before the end of the seven-year holding period[3]. It is also not established whether it can be resold, or what would happen to citizenship in the event of early withdrawal of the investment[3].
Protecting Yourself from Dubious Promises and Payments
Applications will only open in the fourth quarter of 2026, with no exact date[3]: an offer of a "ready-to-file" dossier before the official opening is based on nothing published. Likewise, no promise of a "guaranteed passport" is compatible with the scheme, since every application may be approved or rejected[1].
Funds must be channeled through the formal financial system and comply with anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing standards[1]. Any request to pay through an informal channel therefore contradicts the official announcement.
As soon as a bank transfer is mentioned, common banking frauds in Argentina become a concrete risk: phishing by SMS or WhatsApp impersonating banks, fake QR codes diverting Mercado Pago payments, and the "cuento del tío" scheme, in which a fake bank agent asks for access codes[8].
Fraud, Forged Documents and Exclusions
Decree 366/2025 recalls that the migration law provides for the cancellation of residence, followed by expulsion, when a simulated act, fraud against the law, or false or forged documents were used to obtain a migration benefit or citizenship[9]. The same text also targets residents convicted of an intentional offense punishable by more than five years in prison, or of repeated offenses[9].
Taxation and Residence
Seek advice from a qualified international tax professional before any decision regarding Argentine citizenship acquired through investment.
What to Take Away as an Expatriate or Digital Nomad
- If you are aiming for Argentine nationality today, the practical route remains legal residence followed by ordinary naturalization[6].
- Follow argentina.gob.ar and the Boletín Oficial: implementing regulations and the date applications open will be published there[4].
- Keep the economic context in mind: inflation, down from roughly 25.5% per month in December 2023 to 2-3% per month in 2025-2026, remains a structural factor for any stay or investment in Argentina[10].
